An Outsourced Technology Management Service Provider’s Search for a Premium Hosted Backup Solution Ends with BUMI

New York City based Sinu, Inc. provides outsourced technology management services for companies and non-profits throughout the U.S. Established in 2000, Sinu specializes in businesses that range from 10 to 300 employees. One of the key services they provide is data backup. “We were early adopters of online backup,” says David Owen, Chief Sales Officer and Co-Owner of Sinu. “In the early days of online backup, suppliers charged about $20 per gig which was generally too expensive for our clients.” When less costly options entered the marketplace, Sinu started to experiment with them. “The less expensive services worked but definitely had limitations,” he says. “They provided basic online backup with very little customer support and very few features.”

In 2009, Sinu signed a high-end architecture firm as a new client. “They had a staggering amount of data, and we couldn’t make any of the hosted online backup services we were currently using work reliably with this kind of load and complexity,” Owen says. Sinu challenged one of its lead engineers to find a hosted backup solution that could handle this client’s extensive needs. The provider also needed to walk the team at Sinu through the process and ensure the backup and recovery ran seamlessly. The search for a premium online backup solution began.

The Solution

Sinu’s search led them to BUMI. “BUMI not only had the technology and a rich feature set, but they also provided expert, white glove customer support and took on a tremendous amount of ownership in the solution,” Owen says. Sinu wanted to find a vendor that would stand by their service and not leave them or their clients on their own to deal with failures. “The BUMI service works very well. Sinu began offering their clients two types of hosted online backup: basic and premium, and BUMI became their premium service partner. “We are always looking for partners that will engage with us. BUMI allowed us to build our own custom dashboards. Their support is fast and efficient, and they made our team more efficient at dealing with problems,” he says.

Today Sinu recommends the most cost-effective hosted online backup with the proper tool set to meet each client’s specific needs. “BUMI is the perfect fit for our clients that are seeking a premium solution,” he says. For clients that have complex data backup requirements or have strict compliance requirements, like some of Sinu’s financial services clients, BUMI is the only solution they recommend. “We had a private equity firm that we migrated to BUMI,” says Owen. “Now they are much better prepared to protect their data because their data is collected and stored in the most comprehensive and reliable way.”

The Results

Hosted backup has always been an important part of Sinu’s service, but it has never been something their clients spent a lot of time considering. “Most executives don’t care where their backup comes from — they just want to know that their data is safe and that it is outside of their offices,” Owen says. Sinu reports that in recent years companies like BUMI have made backup affordable enough that most of their clients can and do have both local and hosted solutions.

“The old way of dealing with hardware failure was to buy more hardware,” says Owen. “We know systems eventually break, so we wanted to build a solution that’s ready to fix it – we needed the same for our hosted backup service. BUMI delivered with an affordable price plus excellent customer support.” Superior customer service is something Owen says BUMI and Sinu have in common, and the partnership has led both businesses to take a genuine interest in each other’s success. “BUMI is big enough to have scale, but small enough to have time for us,” he says.
