Utility Services Company with Growing Data Storage Needs Selects BUMI Everywhere for Reliability, Speed, Cost Savings and Superior Technical Support

When Chris Bartlett joined Premier as IT Manager in June 2013, the utility services company was using three different data backup solutions including tape backup. “The IT department was backing up 60 terabytes of uncompressed data on local backup servers then sending the backup tapes offsite,” Bartlett says. “The company’s tape and daily pickup costs were growing exponentially. On top of that, the backups were unreliable.” Bartlett was concerned about the integrity of the data and feared that if there was a major server failure, the recovery time would have been unacceptable. “We estimated it could take up to 14 hours just to restore a single server.”

In order to reduce costs, lessen the investment of internal IT resources and improve data backup reliability, Bartlett decided to find a better data backup and recovery solution.

The Solution

Immediately after joining Premier, Bartlett realized the company’s Microsoft Exchange Server was not backing up properly. Bartlett had used BUMI at his previous firms so he reached out to them. “BUMI was able to get our Exchange backups running by the end of the week,” he says. “I don’t know many other service providers who would do that at no charge. BUMI created a test environment to show what our compressed data would look like and to prove that they could get our Microsoft Exchange backups working nightly.”

Premier needed a solution that could handle lots of data growth. “Our company provides a video solution for damage prevention,” Bartlett explains. “Workers take video as they are working in the field. We needed to be able to store 20 uncompressed terabytes of it annually.” Bartlett advised Premier’s management team to move all data backup to BUMI. Premier chose BUMI Everywhere which enables Premier to back up both to a device onsite for quick recovery speed as well as to a BUMI data center in Toronto for disaster recovery protection.

The Results

Premier selected BUMI Everywhere in July 2013; just one month after Bartlett became IT Manager. “Going to BUMI was an easy decision and an easy sell to the executive team,” he says. “It is a single point of management, it is easy to use, I am familiar with the service and I am very confident in their white glove technical support.”

BUMI Everywhere is now backing up all of Premier’s file servers, content management system, Exchange data and VMware servers. Bartlett reports that Premier’s restore times and costs have significantly decreased. “BUMI has become an extension of my IT department. It’s tough to quantify how many man hours we are saving,” says Bartlett. “Backups should just work, and with BUMI they do. Now my staff can spend their time managing mission-critical projects and not the backups.”
