Disaster Proves to a Global Trade Services Company that All Hosted Backup Services Are Not the Same

Charter Brokerage is a global trade services company licensed to operate in the United States and Canada. As a customs broker and freight forwarder, Charter provides prompt and efficient import and export clearance of merchandise, focusing on a large variety of industries including petrochemicals, chemicals, biofuels, industrial machinery and equipment, metals, and food products. Charter is the industry leader in providing drawback services for the recovery of import duties, taxes and fees. They also provide administrative and inventory-tracking services for the operation of foreign-trade zones and bonded warehouses.

Charter is a transactional based business that works with US and Canadian customs and files paperwork on behalf of their clients. They have specialized business applications and data which are housed on their servers. “The transactional information resides on a SQL server, so that server must be fully backed up and be able to be restored instantly,” says Tiberiu Stanescu, IT Manager for Charter Brokerage. “That’s our business.”

In the summer of 2011, Charter had been using a hosted online backup solution for a few months that was not living up to its promises, especially in the critical area of support services. “Whenever we tried to contact their support line we would get referred to a chat session in a remote location,” said Stanescu. “We needed much more individualized support because we were having major problems with files not getting backed up properly. We were also never able to test the restore process. It didn’t take long for us to realize that we had made a mistake putting our trust in this hosted online backup company.”

Charter began researching other online backup services, including some of the more commercial and home-based user services. “They seemed fine in the beginning of the vetting process, but as we dug deeper we just weren’t getting an acceptable level of comfort,” he says. “We were especially concerned when we started discussing backing up business software like our SQL server. Their demos showed they were capable, but they weren’t able to answer all of our technical questions. Further due diligence showed they weren’t going to be able to meet all our needs.”

Backup and recovery of their data is very important to Charter as they must provide access to their customers’ information 24/7. Uptime is critical, and Charter had to have a reliable and quick way to get their data back in any event.

The Solution

Charter found Backup My Info! through a Google search. Stanescu says they immediately found BUMI’s sales team to be knowledgeable and friendly. They also liked the fact that BUMI’s Wall Street location was convenient to Charter’s main office in Midtown Manhattan.

“BUMI let us do a trial run of their solution which was very helpful,” he says. “We got to see firsthand how the software worked and how the support worked. It was the trial period that sold us. Instead of telling us how everything would work, they showed us.” Charter found BUMI’s trial process provided much more insight than the demos that the other hosted online backup companies performed. “Unlike some other backup solutions we looked at, with BUMI we got to talk to an actual human,” he says. “That was key to our decision as well.”

Charter uses BUMI to backup their Microsoft applications including SQL, Sharepoint and IIS, Linux servers, file and print servers, application servers, domain controllers, and their virtual infrastructure including VMware Virtual Servers. “BUMI is now backing up all the key servers that make our business run,” says Stanescu.

The Results

 

If Charter needed further proof that not all hosted backup companies were the same, they certainly got it just a few months after switching from their previous provider to BUMI. “BUMI proved their worth pretty early in our relationship when we had a huge disaster in December 2011, losing our entire virtual infrastructure,” Stanescu says. “As soon as we realized we had the issue we asked BUMI to start the restore process. The servers we relied on BUMI for came back up with no issues. We were up and running again within a day’s time.”

About a month later Charter had another issue, this time losing a big percentage of their user accounts in their active directory. “We called BUMI and within two or three minutes our main support people were on the phone, walking us through a restore process. This is a more difficult process than a typical file restore, and their professionals got us back up with no problem,” he says. “That proved to us that BUMI was very good with more sophisticated types of backups. After that we had even more confidence in them.”

Stanescu says one reason Charter and BUMI are such a good fit is because the companies are run similarly. “The bottom line is: we are both in the customer service industry,” he says. “Our clients are very large, yet we need to make sure everyone who works with us is kept happy and confident that their important work is being done by professionals. They want to know that when they have a problem, it becomes our problem until it is resolved. BUMI treats their business and their clients with that same respect and dedication.”
