HIPAA Compliant Data Backup & Recovery for Healthcare Organizations

A major focus of all medical organizations is the security and privacy of electronic health records and their transmission between health care entities. Organizations must ensure the confidentiality and integrity of their members’ health records, and transmission of data must be authenticated and encrypted. Additionally, security policies and procedures must be documented and implemented.

Established in 1996, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, referred to as HIPAA impacts all areas of the health care industry and was designed to improve the efficiency of health care by standardizing the exchange of administrative and financial data and to protect the privacy, confidentiality and security of private medical information.

Under HIPAA Security Rule 164.308(a)(7)(ii)(A), medical providers and their business associates are required by law to implement a data backup plan that ensures Protected Health Information (PHI) is properly safeguarded. In accordance with HIPAA requirements, BUMI ensures that data is encrypted prior to being sent to the BUMI servers and that data remains encrypted on the servers. BUMI will sign a required HIPAA business associate agreement with either a covered entity or business associate (healthcare organizations and their contractors) to certify that they comply with the new HIPAA Omnibus Rule. In addition, BUMI’s HIPAA-ready solution for healthcare organizations includes:

  • Fully managed and automated off-site data protection
  • User authentication and role-based access
  • 24×7 live support and data recovery
  • Proactive monitoring and customized notifications
  • Support for backing up mobile devices such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets
  • Military-grade encryption at the source and within our two highly secure offsite data center locations (SSAE 16 Type I & II)
  • Customizable archive and retention rules for retaining large amounts of data

“From the moment we started using them, BUMI was on top of everything. When we first signed on, we had a connection problem due to the security on our network. With our previous provider, we would have been told that the problem was on our network, and we would have received no help troubleshooting the issue. With BUMI, not only did the technical team instantly know where the trouble spots were, but they worked with us to resolve them. What a difference!” – Eric Lau, IT Support Engineer, Preferred Health Partners
